Laughing Clowns - History of Rock And Roll Lyrics

A very exciting series of comment posts from Graham,
a self confessed Clowns big fan, has lifted the shroud
of mystery concerning many of the Clowns greatest
songs.
Thank you Graham
We can now all sing along on Monday night!

Big fan of the Laughing Clowns.
You might be able to use these lyrics.

They came on an insert in the first vinyl
edition of
"The History of
Rock'n'Roll Volume One".
I haven't found them anywhere else on the Internet.

Graham

THEME FROM "MAD FLIES, MAD FLIES"
Mad flys have remade my face
A puzzle of this movie flesh
Do remember me?
Stretch yourself to the brink of ruin
The details of our night will be kept obscure

Someone’s got a bullet + they won’t say where they got it
Please stay awhile
It’s meant for you not meant for me
A reflex action you can’t see
It’s kept obscure
Bake a pie for eternity
You’ll be so hungry believe you me
Predictable

Someone’s got a bullet + they won’t say where they got it
Please stay awhile
Watch the match go tap! tap! tap!
It’ll really tear me heart out
To be left alone

Mad flys have remade my face
No puzzle why we fell from grace
Predictable
Now stretch yourself to the brink of ruin
The details of this night are really kept obscure

EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY
This situation so spick and span
A hopeless garbage can
A very sexual rubber man
Didn’t hear you blah! Blah! Blah!
Your guardian angel’s too quick
You cut to the quick

A tattooed mermaid swims on your arm
A grinning mouth rimmed with spit
And you’re tonguing a hollow tooth
So again we are aware
The ticks and fleas in your hair
Must like it in there

And of the sun you dreamed and dreamed
The dreams you always stored away to keep
A dirty towel you are so dumb
A stupid cow you are so dumb
‘cause what you see is what you are

So again we are aware
The ticks and fleas in your hair
Must like it in there
Every dog has its day

HOLY JOE
Brother to the dopes whose heights I’ll never reach
Bright eyes keep watching strings attached
Holy Joe walked out
Said it’s right to act like that
If there’s mass reaction strings attached

Holy Joe had something
When he said I’d like the beach
Know your body language
Keep your fingers out of reach
You can’t get anywhere

Holy Joe will make it
He’s gonna play for keeps
Know your body language
Study figures on the beach
You can’t get anywhere

Like the dew that falls
Nail my body to the floor
Holy Joe will watch you strings attached
So let’s get with the times
Everybody stand in line
Holy Joe will help you strings attached

SOMETIMES (I JUST CAN'T LIVE WITH ANYONE)
Your death was so graceless it didn’t rate a mention
Not even by your small group of friends
Not an eyebrow raised
No words of praise passed through our lips that day
Oh my what an ordinary day
You could have hoped for more

It was your solitary right
To share this occasion
With everyone you know
But the pressure point is low
And no-one even seems to know
It’s just an ordinary day

It’s raining in the park
I can’t even see a spark
Of the type of person that you are
No not even from a distance

Hopeless is all you’ll ever hope to be
And it gets hard to count past three
It’s just an ordinary day
Anyone at all
Sometimes I can’t live with
Anyone at all

THE LAUGHING CLOWNS
You’re feeling a bit uncertain
But you don’t know how or why
Don’t pretend it’s the final curtain
Raise the scarlet banner high
It’s up to you better see it through

I don’t want to sound like a fool
‘cause I know that you’ve had it hard
But it’s not such a big decision
And you’re holding the highest card
It’s up to you better see it through
When the laughing clowns fall down
To the ground and they know
There’ll be another show
Because laughing clowns get up off the ground
And they know
There’ll be another show

Don’t get trapped by your self pity
‘cause you’ve always had more pride
You’d get drained like so much water
You don’t need that on your side
It’s up to you better see it through
When the laughing clowns fall down

You said that you’re glad it’s over
Traumatic times shrugged off
Sick of playing in phoney dramas
Think you’ll like it all that way
It’s up to you better see it through
When the laughing clowns fall down
To the ground la la la la la

GHOST BEAT
It’s harsher than I’ve ever seen
There’s totally unintelligible shouts from there
Stinging sand and stinging rain
I’d better get inside before it gets too wet
I hear the sound of marching bands
And uniformed feet
Pretty soon I just can’t breathe
With so much screaming my tongue swells more and more each day
One man’s meat is another’s poison
Oh ghost beat

This operation sure is big
They surely must expect a fairly major prize
But they seem so careless
Well I suppose that it’s something that has to be done
With visions of a funeral pyre
See a plane crashing
What kind of place is this
Can you hear it
Ghost beat

I just can’t think with this around
‘cause all I ever hear is that snare drum sound
It’s much harsher than it’s ever been
It’s probably what makes me act this way
I hear the call of self-preservation
I really don’t want to act this way

I WANT TO SCREAM
Under starlight shining
I want to scream alone tonight
The shadows talk of childish things
That lay around my careful home

Conversation stops dead in the dead of the day
Not quite sure if I like it that way
No more rumours around town now
Check on the time it hasn’t changed
Tables and chairs are still arranged
I try to think of past events
A childhood love that was heaven sent
But it’s not

Face contorts a rubber mask
But I’m well matched up to the farce
The windows allow a cruel blue light
I close my eyes, the light’s too bright

Phone doesn’t ring, no intrusion from outside
Wall paper shapes just a bit too bold
Turn away from the wall now
Check on the time it hasn’t changed
Tables and chairs are still arranged
I try to think of past events
A childhood love that was heaven sent
But it’s not

Under starlight shining white
I want to scream alone tonight
The shadows talk of childish things that are done for

My face bends like a rubber mask
I believe I’m well matched up to the farce
But the lights in my eyes are cruel and blue
That will do me

Don’t look out or beyond
Calm in this my traitor’s death
Cold and empty like the bells
Now there’s nothing left to sell
That will do me

CLOWN TOWN
This town, clown town
This town is all the town that we have
Time, our time
Time to do all the things that we need
Throw our trouble to the wind
Life’s not meant to be hard in
Our town, clown town
This town is all we have but our time
Spend time
Time to do all the things that we want
Blow some bubbles in the wind

And you know
What those men of straw don’t know
And they’ll never like this town
With their two feet on the ground

EVERYTHING THAT FLIES (IS NOT A BIRD)
Yeah we danced around the golden calf
And we had a very sharp knife
And we never did anything by halves
We had a strong philosophy of life
And everything that flies is not a bird

Yeah we give it such a friendly reception
Disarm it and disembowel it with a feather
Hope for the best nothing’s too good
For the lords of the plague
When everything that flies is not a bird

You’re a part of my world here
You’re the air that I breathe in
You’re a part of my world here
The water I urinate in

And the wind and sea get up on their hind legs and walk across the land

I have to cut off the electricity to turn off the light
We had a strong philosophy on light
And everything that flies is not a bird
Is not a bird

COLLAPSE BOARD
You shake your head you can’t believe
The sickening stability of my life
You’ve got about an hour left
And then you’re standing
On the collapse board again
And feel the rope around your neck again

I clasp your hands behind your head
Then catch a fly and throw it to the ground
You’ve got about an hour left
And then you’re standing
On the collapse board again
And feel the rope around your neck again
And then you’re standing
On the collapse board again
Bored again

I like how you can't work out the lyrics, and the vocals become just another melodic instrument. You've all been spoiled! Law Of Nature and Ghosts of an Ideal Wife both came with lyric sheets also. Not too hard to get on LP, but near impossible to find on CD, as they were only pressed up once in 1995.
